Algueira 'Pizarra' Mencia 2013
galicia,
spain
$105
Algueira’s flagship Mencía comes from the oldest vines of the estate, mainly from the sun-trapping, 80% slope of the Carballocovo vineyard, where the vines have over seventy vintages behind them. Pizarra is the local word for the schist and slate soils that seem to bring a pungent, smoky minerality to the wine. Nominated, by Jesús Barquín et al in The Finest Wines of Rioja and Northwest Spain, as one of Galicia’s top 10 reds, this is clearly one of the most inspiring Mencía (and Spanish red) wines on the market. Beautiful perfume of red and blue fruits plus lots of Provencal herb and savoury light-brown spices. A fantastic level of supple depth and purity of fruit with great balance. - Ian Cook, FWC.
