It’s a fantastic release with the common theme being one of elegance and relative restraint. This applies to both the 2025 whites and the 2024 reds. In general, the By Farr wines are typically impressive within their full-bodied frames, however this year I noticed a pinch more subtlety in the wines, particularly in the viognier, chardonnay and ‘Farrside’ pinot noir. Indeed it was the Farrside that was the clear winner on the day for all of us tasting at the shop, with its elegance, lifted perfumes and vibrant flavours seducing all of us. Ches Cook, FWC.

The pick of the wines in this release. To be honest, Farriside is usually my pick of the wines every release, but this year it was quite obvious, with dad and Jeremy at the shop also agreeing. The nose is immediately appealing and all-encompassing. It’s very aromatic and pure, showing aromas of rose petal, sweet strawberry and blood plum. We agreed that the elegance on display went beyond our expectations for this wine. On the palate it is silky and deep, but with an immediate approachability. Flavours here span brown spice and earth with pomegranate a surprise appearance bringing added lift and brightness. One of those wines which is great immediately but will also clearly reward some cellar time. – Ches Cook, Five Way Cellars.

I regularly question my relevance in writing these notes, as such frequent exposure numbs the thrill. I expect a level of quality that is outrageously high and over time, you get used to them. I try to sit back and remember what it feels like to try these for the first time. It seems like an odd position, but in the world of Pinot Noir, there is an abundance of light red wines with some pretty smells, some even have nice texture. This is not that type of wine, it is far, far better. I’ve had so many of these amazing wines, my compass only has true north. The needle oscillates a little, but no more than a meander down an equally beautiful path. As I clumsily type this metaphor, I want it to mean that I’ve never had to search for my bearings, the wine is always in the right place.

The new Farrside is no exception, as it delivers notes of earth, petals, dark ripe fruit and black tea. It smells of spices, dried herbs and lifted notes that remind me of the stems that give this wine such power and life. There is a generosity in evolution to this wine, it is not merely tight and firm, it has softened, it has unfurled, and makes you go back to the glass, time and time again. By Farr

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0061/3331/7750/files/9980_Image1_61f15abc-036e-4feb-a85f-8ba0021960ff.jpg?v=1782878354
by-farr-sangreal-pinot-noir-2024
By Farr 'Sangreal' Pinot Noir 2024

Sangreal has added volume to Farrisde, potentially at the sacrifice of some elegance. It’s dialled-up with added fruit weight and a slightly denser mid-palate. It’s concentrated and sweet-fruited, displaying more ripeness and a touch more chew (attributed to the 60% whole-bunch fermentation). The most compelling feature of the wine is the undergrowth / damp earth / forest floor aspect which brings in a lot of complexity which will only expand over time. If you’re looking for some grunt in your Pinot, this should be your choice over Farrside. – Ches Cook, Five Way Cellars.

This wine smells like Pinot Noir that has stopped me in my tracks. It smells like wine that I recall when people ask me, how good can wine be, or is there a difference between cheap wine and expensive wine. It smells like wine that I dream about, it smells like wine that made me fall in love with wine. Whatever I write is irrelevant, because it's my experience, my mouth, my tongue, my budget. Flowers, spices, oak, sunshine, love, hardwork, perfume, loss and years of dedication. It smells like the cellar during harvest and the mud on your boots during pruning. It's a warm kitchen with friends and family and duck roasting in an oven. I can write a standard note about petals and acid and texture, but it doesn't really tell you what it feels like to drink it. By Farr

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0061/3331/7750/files/9981_Image1_0a502745-7c9a-4d17-a022-6f259f8243d0.jpg?v=1782878358
by-farr-chardonnay-2025
By Farr Chardonnay 2025

A great release for this wine. It’s a wine of generosity but it pulls up short of being excessively rich or flabby. Ripeness has been very well judged, offering classic peach and apricot flavours amongst other notes of grapefruit, meal and melon rind. There’s a tension to this release which is particularly appealing; it’s the line of acid that weaves perfectly through the fruit bringing a lift to the flavours and a freshness to the palate. – Ches Cook, Five Way Cellars.

The nose is lovely, welcoming, it offers notes of ripe fruit, the smells in the glass are so evocative, this has all the elements that make you want to drink it. The palate, sleek but generous. Whenever I write a note like that I’m aware that it’s weird. What is sleek but generous? I mean that it is balanced. The weight of the wine is in the goldilocks zone, there are no angles that aren’t aligned, it feels smooth, chiselled and in proportion. The generosity of it comes from the intensity of the flavour. Sleek can be perceived as diminutive, but this wine is not that. It’s powerful, streamlined and draws your attention. As always, to talk just of fruit is too simple. This wine tastes of soil, flint, river pebbles, things you don’t immediately think to put in your mouth, but it’s the smell of them that triggers the recognition. This Chardonnay is complex, layered and thrilling. Find oysters to eat while you drink it, find a sea breeze and a view. Find a friend to sit next to, or drink it thinking of them. By Farr

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0061/3331/7750/files/9573_Image1_92510765-ec11-44a9-a1e4-0384dda62fa0.jpg?v=1782878359
by-farr-shiraz-2025
By Farr Shiraz 2024

Always a wine we like and typically the dark horse in the range, although more and more it appears as though the secret is out… This year’s Shiraz has its trademark silkiness and slurpiness, with bramble, black pepper and black olive flavours amongst a nice core of fruit. A lick of nutmeg suggests some classy new oak within a medium bodied frame. – Ches Cook, Five Way Cellars.

This is always so, so good. It’s complex which I love, as so often this grape is one dimensional. There is more than a note of ripe fruit, there is graphite, black olives, it feels silky yet there is a note of ocean spray, a faint yet lovely salinity, then follows the spice. There is so much going on in this wine, and I know it’s a tired saying, but this is undoubtedly a Pinot drinker's Shiraz, and by that I mean it is endlessly interesting, I’m not saying that it is light. The texture is perfect in that it has intensity without being flabby, and I think this is too often overlooked. Shiraz need not be a fruit bomb as it masks all the good parts this grape has to offer. Call it Rhone-like if you want, I know that will draw criticism, but few Australian Shiraz come close to that level of finesse, texture and savoriness. It’s By Farr Shiraz, that’s a far better way to describe it. By Farr

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0061/3331/7750/files/9982_Image1_15648165-92d6-4963-a90b-5d18afd81793.jpg?v=1782878363
