Woodlawn Tasmania 'Three Wishes' Chardonnay 2021
It was great to see Ricky Evans recently (late May 2023) and to be brought up to speed with his latest releases. There is clearly a lot of thought that goes into these wines. While Ricky has been working with these single vineyards (Three Wishes Vineyard and Waverley Vineyard) for some time now, it is only from 2021 vintage onwards that he is bottling them separately. That is because, he explains, it has taken him a number of years to study and properly understand what each site provides. In other words, he didn't want to make 'single vineyard' wines if their stories and their individuality were not understood or expressed properly. I like that...
Three Wishes is a warmer site compared to Waverely and as such, this wine has more generosity of fruit and a slightly larger frame. It's very nicely textured, too, with flavours of white peach, some salt, honey and melon. The acid balance is spot-on and a saline tinge through the finish is particularly appealing. Jeremey called it 'salted citrus' which nails it. Great Chardonnay. - Ches Cook, FWC.
