Ochota Barrels Slint Chardonnay 2019
Just tried Taras Ochota’s Slint Chardonnay 2019 and the flinty, saline character immediately took my mind to Chablis and I was unable to shake the comparison. The foundations of this wine are built on chalky minerality. Quartz and limestone characters are present too, with high levels of taut natural acidity bringing clarity and vitality to the fruit. I love the linear saline character and only hints of fruit sweetness in all the right places. Even though it’s very linear, it still has a commanding textural presence. As if all of this wasn’t enough, notes of pear rind add further interest and enhance the texture of the wine. The focus and precision of this wine is fantastic and there is an enviable amount of complexity here for such a young chardonnay. The Lenswood fruit really shines and Taras’s light touch is impeccable. Highly recommended. It’s a small vintage so will not be around for long. – Ian Cook FWC.
